Recording-apparatus comprises a stylus under a carriage 15 on a rail 14 extending along an arm 1 pivoted on a spindle 2. The carriage 15 is moved across a chart 4, in accordance with a variable quantity to be recorded, by a light, inextensible chain 17 clamped to the carriage 15 by a plate 18, passing in one direction round a guide pulley 19 and a pulley 20 on the spindle 2 and in the other direction round a pulley 23 above the spindle 2 and close to a pulley 21 on the spindle 2. When the arm 1 is turned about the spindle 2 to change the chart, the chain 17 is wound round the pulley 21 by the same amount that it unwinds from the pulley 20 and though the carriage 15 moves it resumes its previous position when the arm 1 is turned back. A friction roller 33, driven by a motor 32, drives a sector 27 to which the ends of the chain 17 are attached, one through a spring 28. When applied to a spectrophotometer, the sector spindle 31 may carry an optical attenuator 35. The chain may be of rolled gold on gilding metal having a nickel plated finish and the pulleys may be made of a low friction plastic and mounted on a ball bearing. The arm 1 cannot touch the chart and the recording pressure is determined by the weight of the carriage 15, which is pivoted about the rail 14.
