Abstract

1,113,196. Gravity and inertia switches. T. F. GRIFFETH. 17 March, 1966, No. 11744/66. Heading H1N. [Also in Division F1] A device for stopping the engine of a vehicle (see Division F1) upon excessive tilt or cornering speed comprises four tubular mercury (or the like) switches mounted in pairs such that the switches of each pair are oppositely inclined with respect to the horizontal and the two pairs are arranged at 90 degrees, rotatable means being provided for varying the sensitivity of the device by adjusting the relative inclinations of the switches. In one embodiment (Figs. 5 to 8, not shown) the switches (94) are mounted on telescopic bases (96) each pivotally attached at one end to a bracket (85) in a housing (62) and pivoted to a common central member (70) to form a cruciform arrangement. The central member (70) is threaded on to a screwed shaft (64) which can be rotated to raise or lower the member, (70) and hence simultaneously adjust the inclination of all four of the switches (94). In another embodiment (Fig. 9, not shown) each pair of switches are separately adjustable by rotation of a bevel pinion (114) to rotate two mating bevel gears (112) in opposite directions, the switches (106) being respectively carried on the bevel gears (112).
