Abstract

1,113,187. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 9 March, 1967 [1 April, 1966]. No. 11231/67. Heading G6C. A fuel element comprises a tube 4 of metallic fuel, e.g. slightly alloyed U, enclosed in an outer can 6, e.g. of a Mg alloy with a low Zr content, which is in close contact with the outer wall of the tube 4 and closed by plugs 12 preferably of the same material; a rod 14 of solid material, e.g. graphite, Al 2 O 3 , MgO, SiO 2 or ZrO 2 , extending through the tube 4 in close contact with its inner wall and having end parts projecting from the tube, each end part being covered by one of the plugs 12; and caps 20 into which fit the end parts covered by the corresponding plugs 12. The caps 20 at opposite ends of the fuel element are of matching shape so as to centre successive elements in a stack within a reactor channel. Each of the plugs 12 has an extension 18 which covers one of the projecting end parts of the rod 14. The caps 20 prevent any creep of the flat end parts of the extensions 18 through which the thrust forces are transmitted between the rod 14 and the oaps 20, which end parts may be roughened to increase their resistance to creep. The forces are transmitted from one element 2<SP>1</SP> to the next element 2 in a stack between the rods 14<SP>1</SP>, 14 by the extensions 18<SP>1</SP>, 18 and caps 20<SP>1</SP>, 20 without any intervention of the tubes 4 or the parts of the plugs 12<SP>1</SP>, 12 which are in direct contact with the fuel and consequently at a high temperature.
