Abstract
1,113,073. Fluid-pressure control valves &c. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. 11 Oct., 1966 [15 Oct., 1965], No. 45361/66. Heading F2V. A multi-way repeater switching valve comprises a valve body 10 and two reciprocable closure members 20 and 22 which repeatedly make and break one of two fluid passages extending between two inlets 12 and 14 and one outlet 16. If both closure members are reciprocated in phase with respect to one another then at the instant of members 20 and 22 being in their lowermost position (as seen in the drawing), inlet 14, connected, e.g., to a pressure supply, communicates with the outlet 16 through passages 36, 42, 36a, 48 and 36b. In the other extreme position, a similar connection is made through ducts 34, 42, 34a, 48 and 34b. Alternatively if the two closure members are reciprocated 180 degrees out of phase with respect to each other, then upon member 20 reaching its lowermost position member 22 is in its uppermost position thereby bringing into communication port 12, e.g. vacuum, and outlet 16 through ducts 30, 38, 30a, 44 and 30b. With positions reversed the same connection is made, but through ducts 32, 40, 32a, 46 and 32b. Thus depending on the relative phase of the two closure members a connection between either one of ports 12, and 14 and port 16 is repeatedly made and broken. Reciprocation of the two members is achieved by moving coil actuator assemblies 24 and 28 basically comprising a permanent magnet 50, a soft iron cap 54, a restoring spring 60 and a coil 58. Terminals A, B, E and F are connected to electrical circuits (Fig. 2, 4 and 5, not shown), which periodically actuate the assemblies and provide the means for shifting the phase of one closure member with respect to the other, this being done by holding stationary for one halfcycle one of the two closure members when it attains either one of its two extreme positions. The switching valve, which may comprise more than two closure members, is designed for use in hydraulic tape transporting mechanisms which use pressure and vacuum to control the movement of tape from one capstan to another.
