Abstract

Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act] Proofing.-White leather is made by incorporating with the skins or hides an insoluble white salt of one of the alkaline earth metals during or subsequent to a chrome or like tanning or tawing. Barium sulphate is preferred, and the process may consist in impregnating the skin alternately with a soluble salt, e.g. sodium sulphate, and barium chloride, by drumming the skins in solutions of these salts, thus effecting the precipitation of barium sulphate within and upon the body of the skin. Skins thus treated are more impervious to moisture, and are improved by glazing.
