Abstract

111,302. Clark, C. H. Nov. 15, 1916, [Convention date]. Skates.-To facilitate travelling on roads, a skate is fitted with a front wheel 2, Fig. 1, on the inside and a rear wheel 4 on the outside of the frame 6, and a brake 26 operated by a pivoted brace or arm 18 which acts to support the ankle of the wearer is provided. The brake is applied by making a slight additional forward movement of the foot in excess of the normal stroke. Toe-clamps 10 and a heel-strap 14 are fitted to the foot-rest 8. The brace 18 carries a crank-arm 24 at its lower end with a brake-roller 26, and is connected at its upper end to a band 20 carrying an ankle-strap 22. In a modification, Fig. 3, the front wheel 2 and the foot-plate 8 are pivoted to the frame 6 to facilitate steering, and the brake-disk 32 is operated by arms 36, 38 and a link 34 from the brace 18. When the brace 18 is rocked, a pin 45, Fig. 5, carried by the hub 40 of the disk 32 moves in a groove 44 in the spindle. and the disk 32 is forced against the web 47 of the rear wheel.
