Abstract
1,112,988. Friction fuzes. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 28 Oct., 1966 [28 Oct., 1965], No. 48574/66. Heading F3A. A friction fuze comprises a casing 1, a helically wound friction wire 5 passing through a friction primer 4a in a cup 4, polytetrafluorethylene discs 2 and 3, and an ignitable charge 8 separated from the primer by a large particle 6 and a number of smaller particles 7 made of low melting material e.g. lead, Devanda's alloy or Wood's alloy. The charge 8 facesa pyrotechnic mixture (not shown) such as a powder charge, smoke charge or safety fuze. When the friction wire 5 is pulled out from the fuze the primer 4a ignites the charge 8 and the heat developed melts the particles 6 and 7, the opening in the casing through which the wire has been withdrawn being sealed by the molten mass solidifying in the region of the opening. The particle 6 has a cross-seotional area of at least 80% of the internal cross-sectional area of the casing. The charge 8 consists of 60 parts of lead dioxide and 40 parts of metallic silicon.
