Apparatus for facing and centring rods &c. comprises a cutter head 31, Fig. 1, having a centre drill 34, and a facing cutter 35 thereon, a support 5 for the workpiece, a member 13 having pins 15 for clamping the work, which pins are actuated by a sleeve 28 having chip removing openings 29 and whose vertical movement is controlled by a lever 20. Three columns 2 are fixed to a base 1 and a cover plate 3, and grooves 4 are formed in the columns so that the support 5 can be placed at the required height. Plate 5, Fig. 3, has a workpiece supporting pin 7 and a work-locating V block 10, and is formed with recesses 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, which enable it to be inserted and withdrawn from grooves 4. Member 13, Fig. 1, is located in grooves 12 in the columns, and carries the spring-urged work clamping pins 15, and a pin 18 which abuts one of the columns. Lever 20 is connected to an eccentric shaft 19, which carries rods 22 connected to sleeve 28 by pins 27, so that as the lever is actuated, the sleeve 28 will move vertically, to thus actuate pins 15 to clamp or release the workpiece. Adjustment of the vertical position of sleeve 28 to accommodate different diameter workpieces is by means of eccentric bushes 57, Fig. 1, fitted with graduated discs 56. Shaft 38 of head 31 is driven by an electric motor 37 supported by a member 41 having bushes 40 which enclose hollow racks 39. The latter are driven by pinions 45, actuated by a lever 48. An adjustable stop 50 is provided for limiting the movement of lever 48. In a modification, shaft 38 is replaced by a shaft 36, Fig. 5, which is insertable in a drilling machine chuck, and shaft 36 is pivotable in head 31 about a pin 62 in a bore 59.
