Abstract
1,112,328. Unpacking. GEO. J. MEYER MANUFACTURING CO. 6 Sept., 1966 [14 Sept. 1965], No. 39736/66. Headings B8A and B8C. In order to facilitate the opening of the leading flap of a rectangular carton box 6 travelling on a conveyer belt of apparatus for emptying the carton, the carton is rotated through 180 degrees so that the aforementioned flap becomes the trailing flap. Flap opening.-Flap opening means include a plough 7 which opens the side flaps 8, 9 when the carton is travelling on input conveyer 3, Fig. 2. Hook means 11 open the trailing flap (12), (see also Fig. 3, not shown), and the carton is then discharged to a further conveyer 13 moving faster than conveyer 3 and hence causing cartons to separate. The reversing means (see also Figs. 4, 5, not shown), includes a pivoted arm 16 having a foot 18 and stop plate 19 and adapted to engage a corner of the carton. An endless belt 20 engages the side of the carton and cooperates with the arm 16 to rotate it. To align the carton correctly, a guide roller 25 may complete the rotary operation. A pulley 23 of belt 20 is resiliently mounted so that run 24 of the belt may yield under pressure from the carton corners. To open the now trailing flap, (see also Figs. 6, 7, 8, not shown), a shoe 34 and hook 39 are provided, the edge 35 of the shoe riding over the now open leading flap (12) and over the carton contents, the hook 39 subsequently opening the now trailing flap (26). Dumping the contents.-The carton is inverted by passing round a drum 41 (see also Fig. 9, not shown), carrying a pair of pneumatic tyres 42, (43), the carton being held against the drum by a driven belt 44 running on rollers 45 . . . 49, a resiliently mounted roller 50 being arranged to take up any slack in belt 44. At the upper end of drum 41 (see also Figs. 10, 11, not shown), a support plate 51 receives the carton which then passes over support wires between which the contents drop, the wires retaining any partition elements. The contents, e.g. cans, fall on to a conveyer 52 to be discharged. At the sides of support plate 51 are positioned guides (55), (56) carrying driven belts (155), (156) engaging the side flaps 8, 9, rollers 157 also being provided to force said flaps against the belts and hence drive the carton along. Driven knocker arms (not shown) may be provided to strike the side flaps and aid in contents release. Finally, the empty cartons are engaged between the opposed side walls of a spaced pair of pneumatic inner tubes 59, (60), (see also Fig. 13, not shown), which invert them and deliver them to a discharge conveyer 61. Fig. 12 (not shown), illustrates a method of discharging separately two layers of cans. A support plate analogous to 51 and wires guide the carton, the then bottom layer falling on to a conveyer. The carton moves over the wires (70a) on to a further support plate which prevents the second layer falling out until it can fall between wires on to a further conveyer or shoot.
