Abstract

A process for the treatment of fibrous polyoxymethylene having a reduced viscosity of at least 3 and a sulphite number of from 0 to 3 which comprises complety dissolving the polymer in an acid anhydride, the weight ratio of anhydride to polymer being greater than 1:1, at a temperature of 170 DEG to 190 DEG C. in the presence of not more than 2% by weight, with respect to the anhydride, of an organic acid and not more than 30 p.p.m. of an alkali metal salt of an organic acid, and recovering the treated polymer from solution. All the examples relate to the treatment of an oxymethylene homopolymer with acetic anhydride, acetic acid, sodium acetate mixtures.
