[Also in Divisions F2 and H2] A step-by-step servomechanism comprises input switches (e.g. transistors) connected in parallel with segments of a voltage divider chain such that, each switch when operated short circuits one part of the chain and when unoperated short - circuits another part, the switches being operated or not so as to shortcircuit all but a selected one of the segments, and a reversible output motor driving a contact arm to seek and stop at the selected segment. The output motor may control a vehicle gearbox. Engagement of the first gear during reverse travel and of the reverse gear when the vehicle has an excessive forward velocity is prevented by two series-connected switches 27, 26 (not shown) which are closed when the vehicle speed exceeds 5 km/h. and when the contact arm is positioned at the segment corresponding to neutral in the gear-box, respectively. When both are closed, these two switches apply a voltage through the contact arm to prevent the output motor starting.
