Abstract
Apparatus for preparing shoe uppers for lasting comprises a platen with forming areas, means for heating the platen, and means for applying pressure over the surface of an upper on the platen to cause the upper to conform to the forming areas. In one embodiment (Figs. 1 and 2, Figs. not shown) a well mulled upper is laid grain side uppermost on a metal platen 2 which has four recesses 6, 8, 10 and 12 for shaping the toe, instep and throat portions of the upper. The platen is heated to 100-120 DEG C., a rubber diaphragm is brought down on to the upper, and compressed air is supplied to chamber 18 above the diaphragm, causing the upper to conform to the shape of the platen. Moisture in the upper vaporizes and escapes through vent holes 14. In a second embodiment (Figs. 3, 4) the electrically heated metal platen having protuberances 36, 38, 40, 42 corresponding to recesses 6, 8, 10, 12, is pressed against a mulled upper supported on a block 46 of soft rubber. Preferably face 48 of the platen does not quite engage the upper thus permitting moisture vapour to escape. Block 46 may be replaced by a water filled pressure member. The upper is held deformed for about 30 seconds.
