Abstract

111,193. Saunders, S. Jan. 6, 1917 Lighting fires.-A fire-lighter adapted to be automatically ignited consists of a wooden structure A. containing a centrally-supported glass or other fragile tube or phial b, which is broken by a cord d or equivalent means, so as to liberate a quantity of sulphuric acid or like material adapted to combine with a quantity of resin and potassium chlorate in a wrapper c and produce fire. The wrapper c is wired on or sealed, and varnished or shellac-coated. The fire-lighter may be dipped in inflammable liquid, and used with other inflammable materials. The cord d may be attached to a movable part of a heating-apparatus such as an ashpit door. which is actuated at a set time by controlling-devices such as those described in Specifications 102,211 and 109,333, [both in Class 51 (i), Furnaces and kilns, Combustionapparatus of]. The breakage of the tube b may be facilitated by a device, Fig. 5, comprising a falling weight e<x>, normally upheld by a projection f<1> on a bell-crank lever f pivoted at f<2>, and released by a connexion h with the controlling- devices. During the setting of the device the lever f is prevented from moving by a sliding part g with a projection g<4> which is moved under the axis of the lever f. The cord d is then passed round the cleat e<3> and the pulley e<4>, the connexion h is attached and the part g is withdrawn, and the device is left ready to be operated by the controlling-devices referred to.
