Abstract

1,111,845. Aircraft. A. P. PEDRICK. 14 April, 1967, No. 2446/66. Headings B7G and B7W. An aircraft intended for V.T.O.L. operation and for high speed flight comprises a fuselage 1, the front part of which may be released at 4 and jettisoned, a delta-shape wing 5 and a tail plane 27 which may be pivoted about its forward lower end 28 to retract within the rear part of the fuselage. Immediately forward of this are housed gas turbine engines 15, 16 which may be pivoted between inclined positions, in which they provide vertical lift and forward propulsion, to fully vertical positions for V.T.O.L. operation, fuselage covers being provided to enclose the engines during high speed forward flight. This is achieved by operation of groups of ram-jet engines and rockets housed in the rear end of the fuselage and operated respectively within and beyond the Earth's atmosphere. Flaps, which are pivoted to the wing upper and lower surfaces on axes X-X and Y-Y to converge rearwardly to accelerate the airflow over the wing during low speed flight are folded against the wing surfaces during high speed flight. A tube 7 is pivotally mounted adjacent the fuselage to be swung from a position adjacent each wing leading edge to a forwardly swept position at which its outer end lies on an axis Z-Z passing through the aircraft C.G. so that air may be discharged from said outer ends for lateral control. Adjacent its root end each tube 7 has a connection with a tube 10, 11 that extends fore and aft of the aircraft so that kinetic head generated by air entering tube 7 heats that passing through tube 10, 1] to assist in propulsion of the aircraft. Fore and aft control in pitch is provided by control jets at the nose and tail of the fuselage. The fuselage is provided with an ablation nose cone.
