Abstract
1,111,621. Handling radioactive material. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM). 2 Feb., 1966 [3 Feb., 1965], No. 4646/66. Heading B4Q. A working chamber 5 for performing operations on radioactive materials comprises two parts 6, 7 of stainless steel telescopic one within the other and hermetically connected by a flexible accordion-pleated sleeve 8 of P.V.C. The telescopic action enables the chamber 5 to be given different heights for various working purposes and a mechanical arrangement is briefly described involving a chain, sprockets and screwthreaded rods for obtaining this variation. The chamber 5 may serve as a glovebox or, as shown, it may be situated inside a shielded hot cell 1 having a window 3 and a manipulator 10 extending through a sealing boot 11 into the chamber. Transparent panels in the part 7 enable the interior of the chamber to be observed through the window 3.
