Abstract

1,111,596. Measuring frequencies. DAWE INSTRUMENTS Ltd. 9 July, 1965, No. 29259/65. Heading G4H. Apparatus for evaluating a frequency which is approximately known comprises gating means enabled for exactly one cycle of the frequency so that pulses of a predetermined frequency are passed to a counter counting down from a predetermined number, the count which, at the end of the cycle, represents the input frequency being displayed. In the form shown the input frequency after being shaped to square wave form is applied to a first gate 9 enabled by a bi-stable device 8 under the control of a display timer 1. The start of a negative output pulse from gate 9 sets a further bi-stable device 11 and the start of the next negative pulse resets it so that a gate 12 is open for precisely one cycle to pass pulses from an oscillator 13, their frequency being determined by the formula K - where T is the range of the periods of the T frequencies for which the apparatus is to be used, e.g. 1/ 45 - 1/ 55 and K is the difference between the frequencies multiplied by a scale factor dependent on the number of decades in the counter, e.g. (55 - 45) x 10. The counters to which the reference pulses are passed count down from a number dependent on the frequency of the reference pulses and the approximate value of the unknown frequency.
