Abstract

1,111,497. Tool-changing. MOTCH & MERRYWEATHER MACHINERY CO. 29 April, 1966, No. 18874/66. Headings B3B and B3C. A drilling, boring, tapping or milling machine tool comprises a turret 26 carrying two spindles .29, 30 such that in traverse of the turret in one direction a working operation is performed and in the opposite direction a tool is returned towards a magazine 31. Indexing movement of the turret is permitted by withdrawing the magazine laterally. The magazine can be loaded by inserting tools one-at-a-time into the lowermost spindle and performing a series of tool change movements. The turret slide is moved hydraulically at feed and rapid speeds. The spindles are rotated by a motor and gearing 66. The turret is indexed by an hydraulic motor 82 driving through worm gearing 76. The worm can float on its shaft to allow for slight overshoot if necessary until a lock-bolt snaps into an indexing recess. Pneumatic clamps 98, 100 hold the turret fast. Each spindle carries a chuck consisting of a sleeve 110 forced against the tool by fluid pressure exerted by a spring 126 acting on a piston 120, 118. Release pressure is supplied through the turret shaft 146 and a rotary connection 134. The magazine 31 is also indexed through a floating worm 158 and an hydraulic motor (168), and is located by a rack-plunger operated hydraulically. The magazine has recesses each containing a lip 186 to engage a groove in a tool 36 and a spring 188 to embrace a collar 192 on the tool. The magazine may receive particular tools in particular sockets or a tool may be returned to any empty socket. It may be rotated in one or both directions. The position of the magazine is recorded by a rotary switch rotating twice for each rotation of the magazine and by a switch 200 actuated by a cam track 198.
