Abstract

111,110. Chase, P. H. Nov. 2, 1916, [Convention date]. Cables and compound conductors; cables with inductances, capacities, and the like.-In an electric cable, the insulation of each conductor is surrounded by a conducting sheath to facilitate the dissipation of heat and equalization of electrostatic stresses, the sheath being formed with slits to reduce eddy current losses. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the sheath is formed with slits 4 arranged so as to lie transverse to the cable when lapped thereon. The slits may be arranged in two sets leaving a central unbroken portion, or portions of the slits may be displaced as shown in Fig. 3. The sheath may be secured to or wound upon an insulating tape and the slits may be closed by being corroded, oxidized, or varnished. Fig. 9 shows an arrangement for a three-core cable in which the heat conduction from the sheaths 73 to the external sheath 78 is assisted by sheaths 80. The sheaths may be embedded in the insulation surrounding a conductor for such purposes as grading of the insulation.
