1,110,814. Analogue to digital converters. ELLIOTT BROS. (LONDON), Ltd. 9 Feb., 1965 [9 Nov., 1963], No. 44297/63. Heading G4H. An analogue-to-digital converter comprises a number of stages 1, 2, 3 in each of which the unknown voltage is compared with a series of equallyspaced reference voltages an output being produced indicating by a marking on one lead the highest reference voltage exceeded. In stage 1 reference voltages 1V1-1V9 having values 1-9 volts are applied to comparators 1C1- 1C9 outputs on leads 5 and 6 indicate that the unknown voltage on lead 4 is less or more than the corresponding reference voltage. One of the AND gates 1A0-1A9 will respond according to the value of the unknown voltage giving an indication on one of leads 1D0-1D9 of the highest digit value exceeded by the unknown voltage. The marked lead 1D0-1D9 causes an appropriate combination of four stages to be set in a store 1B and also opens a switch 8 to cause the corresponding reference voltage to be subtracted from the unknown voltage at 1s. The remainder is applied on lead 9 to the tenths stage 2 where it is compared with voltages 2V1-2V9 having values 0À1V.- 0À9 V. The operation is identical and the difference is applied to the hundredth stage 3. This stage includes no subtracting operation. The values in stores 1B-3B represent the three decimal digits of the value of the input voltage, each digit being binary coded.
