Abstract

N-methylglucammonium polygalacturonate is prepared by reacting N-methylglucamine or a compound yielding N-methylglucammonium ions with polygalacturonic acid or a salt thereof. The N-methyl glucamine compound may be the chloride, hydrochloride, bromide, hydrobromide, iodide, sulphate, nitrate, acetate, succinate or tartrate. The polygalacturonic salt may be of Na, K, Mg, Ca, Al, Pb or Ag, and may be produced by dissolution of the free acid in an appropriate metal salt solution. The product may be purified by treatment with charcoal, followed by filtration and subsequent precipitation with MeOH. The precipitate is dried, redissolved in water and again precipitated with MeOH, cooled and dried. The product is useful in pharmaceutical applications.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions having anti-diarrhoeal and anti-dermatologic activity comprise, as active ingredient, N-methylglucammonium polygalacturonate, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent. They may take forms suitable for oral or external administration.
