Abstract

1,110,559. Filter bed for water. G. T. J. FOX. 30 March, 1967 [31 Dec., 1965], No. 55369/65. Heading BID. A downward flow filter bed for water comprises successive layers of granular media 8-11, whose average particle sizes decrease and whose densities increase downwards, supported on porous Al 2 O 2 plate 7 and having a wire mesh screen 12, finer than coarse layer 11, spaced therabove to restrain bed during backwash cleaning by gas and liquid. Top layer 11-1-5 m.m. diameter and Sp. Gr. 1.04- 1.10, layer 10-0.75-1.0 m.m. diameter, Sp. Gr. 1.3-1.7, layer 9-0.5-0.7 m.m., Sp. Gr. 2.6-2.7, layer 8-0.4 m.m.. Sp. Gr. 3.7-4.3 (diameters of irregular particles are defined in terms of sieve sizes). Layer 11 may be nylon or polystyrene cubes and 1 foot thick, layer 10 anthracite, 9 inches thick, layer 9 sand, 9 inches thick, layer 8 garnet, 6 inches thick. Screen 12 is 2 feet above layer 11 to allow over 50% expansion. Plate 7 and screen 12 are removable.
