Abstract

1,110,274. Sink-and-float apparatus. HAITH ENGINEERS Ltd. 27 Sept., 1966 [29 June, 1965], No. 27415/65. Heading B2H. Apparatus 20, Fig. 1, for separating into its constituents a mixture of produce and waste by flotation in a liquid, comprises a liquid tank 22 and separate produce and waste conveyors 28, 29 extending from below a predetermined level in the tank to positions above that level, the produce conveyor 28 being perforate. A partition, 33, Fig. 3, presents produce, e.g. carrots, floating in liquid in the tank from being lifted from the liquid by the waste conveyor 29. Further, large waste is prevented from getting on to the conveyor 29 by the partition 33, and a baffle plate 32 prevents waste getting on to the produce conveyor 28. A wall 25 divides the tank into a separating compartment 26 and a cleaning compartment 27 from which access to the separating compartment can be obtained below the wall 25 to permit waste to be removed therefrom. An impeller 34 causes an upper layer of the liquid to flow towards the produce conveyor to deposit floating produce thereon. In operation, the mixture is fed from a hopper 10 along a conveyor 11 to a rotary grading screen 12, from the open end of which large stones and large produce are fed by a conveyor 21 for hand-sorting. The rotary screen 12 is driven by rollers 18 and chains 19, and discharges three piles of waste on a floor below its three forward sections 14. The last section 14 is above the apparatus 20. Waste sinks in the bank 22 and is carried away by the conveyor 29. Produce is removed by the conveyor 28 the liquid draining through the conveyor perforations back to the tank. At the upper end of the produce conveyor 28 a chute 36 directs the produce on to a conveyor 37 which directs the produce to a second screen 38. Graded produce leaves the third and fourth sections 39, via conveyors 40, 41. The open end of the screen 38 feeds larger produce to a conveyor 42 which delivers the produce to a bagging station (not shown).
