Abstract

Homopolymers and copolymers are obtained from monomers having the formula <FORM:1110009/C3/1> where m is 1-8, A is alkylene of 2 or 3 carbon atoms, R is H, CH2OH or CH2OR1, where R1 is alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms and X is oxygen or sulphur, by bulk, solution, emulsion or suspension polymerization methods using azo or peroxy catalysts, e.g. persulphates, peroxides, hydroperoxides and peroxy-esters, optionally together with a reducing agent. Chain transfer agents, e.g. mercaptans such as mercaptoethanol, may also be employed. Suitable comonomers include vinyl esters, vinyl pyridines, acrylic and methacrylic acids and their nitriles, esters and amides, itaconic, maleic, chloromaleic, fumaric and citraconic acids and their esters, vinyl ethers and sulphides, styrene and its derivatives, vinyl naphthalene, vinyl-carbazole, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chlorid and allyl esters, and also crosslinking monomers such as divinyl- or trivinyl-benzene, ethylene diacrylate or dimethacrylate, bis(vinyloxyethyl)urea and vinyloxyethyl acrylate or methacrylate. In examples, monomers of the above formula are copolymerized with alkyl(meth)acrylates and vinyl acetate. The polymers may also be prepared by polymerizing an o -(C4-C11) alkenoic acid or ester thereof and aminolyzing the product with an appropriate substituted urea or thiourea. The polymers are suitable in various coating applications and Example 15 describes a water-based paint comprising such a polymer together with an ammonium salt of a maleic anhydridediisobutylene copolymer, titanium dioxide, mica, hydroxyethyl cellulose, ethylene glycol, and unspecified preservative and antifoam agent. Among other applications indicated, copolymers with a major proportion of acrylonitrile can be obtained which are fibre- or film-forming and have improved dye-receptivity. Also, for the same purpose, preformed copolymers of compounds of the above formula can be blended with acrylonitrile polymers.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1110009/C2/1> where m is 1-8, A is alkylene of 2 or 3 carbon atoms, X is oxygen or sulphur and R is H, CH2OH or CH2OR1 where R1 is alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms. The compounds are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1110009/C2/2> with an o -(C4-C11) alkenoyl halide, an o -(C4-C11) alkenoic acid or an ester thereof.ALSO:Paper, textiles, leather, wood, metals such as aluminium, copper and steel, and metals primed with alkyd, aminoplast or epoxy-containing primers are coated with a homopolymer or copolymer containing units derived from <FORM:1110009/B1-B2/1> where m is 1-8, A is alkylene of 2 or 3 carbon atoms, X is oxygen or sulphur and R is H, CH2 OH or CH2 OR1 where R1 is alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms.
