Abstract
A method of providing a ferrous metal wire, e.g. of high carbon non-alloy steel, with a coating of a second metal, such as Zn, having a melting point lower than that of the metal forming the wire by advancing the wire through a molten bath of the second metal, withdrawing the wire from the bath with a coating of the bath metal thereon, depositing on to the so coated wire while the coating is still molten a further coating of the second metal in the form of solid particles thereof electrostatically charged so as to effect adherence between the particles and the coating metal applied by the bath, so as thereby to increase the thickness of the coating, and after the initially molten coating metal has solidified, subjecting the so coated wire to a die or other reduction operation and thereby simultaneously smoothing the surface of the so applied coating. Prior to coating, the wire may be advanced through cleaning and flux applying baths. The wire may be withdrawn from the coating bath in a vertical direction and the particles be applied at a distance not exceeding 6 feet above the bath surface. The particles may be coated prior to their electro-deposition with a wax or other flowable electrostatically insulating non-tacky material.
