Abstract

1,109,423. Magnetic tape recorders. CENTRALISED DICTATION Ltd. 22 April, 1965 [22 Jan., 1964], No. 2863/64. Heading G5R. A multi-track tape carries a series of recorded items on one track and additional signals on a separate track which can be separately detected to indicate the position of the reading head along the tape. Between adjacent recordings T1 are added tone bursts on track T2. The bursts have a low frequency component which is effective during fast wind and rewind and a high frequency component which operates when the tape is travelling at play-back speed. The operator presses a button B, Fig. 1, or dials on a telephone dial, Fig. 3 (not shown) and the tape runs at fast wind speed. A counter CR counts the pulses from head H2, H1 being muted. When the correct number has been counted, the control circuit C switches the recorder to normal playing speed and renders head HI operative. At the end of the item, a pulse from track H2 is effective to cause the control circuit C to switch off head H1 and set the rewinder to fast rewind. The counter now counts the pulses in the reverse direction and when it reaches zero, switches off the tape recorder. The recorded items may be pulses for controlling or selecting other equipment.
