An educational device comprises a number of rods 12, e.g. of square cross-section having on their upper faces letters or figures or other characters, e.g. braille and being slidable in a lid 11 beneath a portion including window (14) (Fig. 1, not shown), the rods on their lower faces including pairs of projections 16 adapted to co-operate with strips 15 of electrically conductive material to complete a circuit from a power source 20 in a box body 10 to a visual or audible signal producing means. The device is used in conjunction with a set of cards or a roll of paper or tape, each card, roll or tape having a set of apertures therein through which the pairs of projections on the rods may contact the strips 15 to complete an electric circuit to energize the signal means. In the described embodiment a card with the representation of a helmet thereon is placed over the strips and when the rods are moved until the word HELMET is shown in the aperture (14), the signal means is actuated. The cards, paper or tape may be provided with a second set of apertures through which the rod projections may contact the strips 15 when the rods are in predetermined neutral or original positions.
