Abstract

In Examples 1 to 4 and 6 and 7 coating and plate-casting compositions containing polyvinyl fluoride, vinylfluoride/vinylbutyrate copolymer or polyvinylidene fluoride, and calcined SiO2-coated TiO2 particles or uncoated TiO2 particles, and N,N-dimethylacetamide or gamma-butyrolactone, with and without compounds including glycidyl polyether, triphenyl phosphite, toluene, dispersing agent, thermal stabilizer, a TiO2 pigment, a green or blue pigment, diatomaceous earth and carbon black are described. In Example 5, a mouldable composition containing nylon 66, lamp black, a TiO2 pigment, a blue pigment, formic acid, water and SiO2-coated TiO2 particles or rutile TiO2 is described. The invention is concerned with the coated TiO2 particles (see Division C1) and various other film-forming resins which may be pigmented with such particles are mentioned generally.ALSO:A pigment comprising a skin of dense hydrated amorphous SiO2 bound upon a core of TiO2 is calcined at 400-1000 DEG C. for at least 1 min. to improve its chalk resistance. The TiO2 core has a surface area > 1 m2/g. with at least one dimension of the TiO2 particles < 5m . The SiO2 skin has a thickness of 3-100m . The density of the skin is such that the difference in surface area per unit volume between the core and product is as follows: (A3D3)-(A2D2) \sO O, wherein A2 and A3 are the specific surface areas of the core and coated product respectively in m2/g., D2 and D3 are the densities of the core and coated product respectively in g/c.c. The initial coated pigment can be obtained according to U.S. Specification 2,885,366. The pigment can be incorporated in a film of an organic polymer. (Lists suitable polymers and other ingredients are specified.)ALSO:In example 2 a composition containing polyvinyl fluoride SiO2-coated TiO2, gammabutyrolactone, dispersing agent, thermal stabiliser and toluene is cast onto an aluminium strip passivated with an amporphous oxide-chromate coating and coalesced at 260 DEG C for 65 sec. The description indicates other polymers can be used.
