Abstract
1,109,230. Vapour burners. VAPOR CORPORATION. 28 Dec., 1966 [8 April, 1966], No. 57874/66. Heading F4T. A heating system for use on railroad stock comprises a main burner 10 including an annular combustion chamber 13 defined by concentric walls 16 and 17 and an annular bottom wall 18, inner and outer annular combustion air chambers 14 and 15 adjacent said chamber 13 and openings 22, 27a-27f in walls 16 and 17, some of which openings are provided with downwardly extending tubes 22, 28, 29, through which combustion air is delivered to the chamber 13, the system also including a pilot burner 11 arranged below the main burner and comprising a cylindrical combustion chamber 37 with a combustion air chamber 42 surrounding it, air being supplied to chamber 37 through openings 45, 46, 47, the inner wall of chamber 14 defining a flue for the pilot burner. A perforated cylindrical baffle 24 is mounted in the main combustion chamber 13 and combustion products therefrom passing into a chamber 68 contain a coil 12 through which a heating medium passes. A choke 30 and deflector 73 direct the combustion products over the coil before they exhaust through a flue 71. A plenum air chamber 52 surrounds the lower half of the main burner and the pilot burner and is supplied with air through a scoop 62. From chamber 52 air passes to the air chambers 14, 15, 42, pipes 67 arranged in the main combustion chamber supplying the air to the chamber 14. Fuel is supplied to both burners from lines 34 and 41 through inlets 31 and 38 circumferentially and equally spaced around the bases 18 and 36 respectively. In line 41 there is a manually adjustable metering valve 81 and line 34 a float valve 82 and a metering and control valve 83. The valve 82 limits the amount of fuel that can be supplied to combustion chamber 13 and valve 83 meters the fuel to the chamber 13 in response to a capillary and bulb arrangement 84 connected to a control system 85. A needle in valve 83 may be operated by a bellows associated with the arrangement 84. The pilot burner is lit through an access tube (86), Fig. 2 (not shown), and the fuel in the main combustion chamber is ignited through apertures 50, 51 from the pilot combustion chamber. To enhance ignition in the main burner a tungsten wire 88 is mounted just inside apertures 51.
