Abstract

1,109,52. Ignition systems. ROTAX Ltd. Jan.7, 1966 [Feb.10, 1965], No.5729/65. Heading F1B. In a spark ignition system, at predetermined intervals the spark produced at the spark gap 18 is of higher energy than the remaining sparks. As shown pulses of current pass through the diode 15 and charge the capacitor 17 through the spark gap 18. After a predetermined number of pulses, however, the voltage across the capacitor 17 reaches the breakdown voltage of the control gap 16 which conducts to cause the capacitor to discharge through the spark gap 18 and produce a spark of higher energy. In a modification a double spark gap associated with resistors is employed. In another modification there are two capacitors separately charged and each associated with a spark gap and one gap is arranged to breakdown more frequently than the other. Alternatively the capacitors could be charged by the same source. A semi-conductor plug or multi-gap plug may be used.
