Abstract

Polyacrylonitrile is prepared from monomeric acrylonitrile by bringing the monomer to the solid state by means of applied high pressure, at the highest temperature within the range -60 DEG to +30 DEG C. compatible with the solid state under said applied pressure, and subjecting the solid monomer to ionizing radiation, e.g. that from disintegration of atomic nuclei, gamma rays, accelerated electron beams, X-rays or ultra-violet radiation. Suitable applied pressures range from 2600 to 10,000 atmospheres. Monomer conversions of at least 35% produce a transparent polymer and, if the conversion is not higher than 50%, the product is also colourless. By appropriate choice of design of reactor the polymer product can be directly obtained as an article of desired shape and size.
