Abstract

1,108,619. Automatic gain control; interference suppression in radio receivers. ANSTALT EUROPAISCHE HANDELSGESELLSCHAFT. 4 Nov., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965], No. 49656/66. Heading H3Q, H4L and H4R. In a short wave receiver having a bandwidth covering a number of pulse communication channels, automatic gain control is applied individually to each channel after separation out from the band. The arrangement is described as applied to a receiver comprising R.F. stages 2, 7 feeding into a first mixer 11, which is followed by branched I.F. amplifiers 12, 17. I.F. amplifier 12 feeds a rectifier 13, the smoothed D.C. output of which is amplified in amplifier 5 and applied to heater coils 4, 9 associated with thermally-variable resistors 3, 8 respectively. Resistors 3, 8 are connected, in series with D.C. blocking capacitors, between the anodes and grids of valves 2, 7 respectively and so provide variable negative feedback, controlling the gain of the R.F. stages. I. F. amplifier 12 also feeds two further rectifiers 14, 15; rectifier 14 feeds into a smoothing network such that its output follows the signal level, and provides a delay bias for rectifier 15 which only becomes conductive on noise pulses exceeding the signal level. On such noise pulses a bias is applied to the outer grid of valve 17 causing it to be cut-off for the duration of the noise pulse. Valve 17 feeds via I.F. filter 18 into a second mixer 19, from the output of which the various communication channels are separated out by means of filters 20a, b, c &c. Each channel comprises an R.C. coupled amplifier comprising cascaded stages 21, 22, 23: the output of stage 22 is rectified by rectifier 29, delayed by delay diode 32 and applied as automatic gain control to bias back stages, 21, 22. The cathode circuit of each of these valves comprises a Zener diode 24, 25 respectively; as the current through the corresponding valve is decreased, the Zener diode increases in impedance and so increases the amount of negative feedback, so reducing the gain.
