Abstract
A strong devitrified glass-ceramic is made by melting a batch, shaping the glass, and heating to 1000-1250 DEG C., at least 80% by weight of the glass consisting of the following, the figures being percentages by weight: ZnO, 32-56; Al2O3, 3-25; SiO2, 32-54; and a nucleation catalyst; the balance, if any, consists of other compatible constituents. The glass contains substantially no Li2O or TiO2. In addition, the glass may contain, up to a total of 20%: Na2O and/or K2O, up to 6 in total; MgO, CaO, SrO, and/or BaO, up to 10 in total, PbO, up to 10; B2O3, up to 10. The nucleation catalyst may be one or more of: P2O5, up to 6.0; MoO3, up to 5.0; ZrO2, up to 7.5; preferably the catalyst is either P2O5 above, or MoO3 with either P2O5 or ZrO2. P2O5 may be added as metallic phosphate, e.g. zinc orthophosphate Zn3(PO4)2. After shaping and before heat-treatment, the articles may optionally be annealed at 650-800 DEG C. and cooled to room temperature. In the heat-treatment the temperature of articles is raised by not more than 10 DEG C. per minute to 500-1250 DEG C. and held for at least 15 minutes. If the temperature is less than 1,000 DEG C., the temperature is again raised at not more than 10 DEG C. per minute to a second holding stage at 1000-1250 DEG C. The cooling rate from the final temperature may be up to 10 DEG C./min. The major crystalline phase is zinc orthosilicate 2ZnO.SiO2. Other crystalline phases are zinc spinel ZnO.Al2O3, "galinite"; quartz, SiO2; and mullite, 3Al2O3,2SiO2. Coefficient of thermal expansion is may be 28.0 to 115.4 x 10-7/ DEG C. Some samples have dilatometric softening point > 900 DEG C.
