Abstract

1,108,457. Photo-electric position finding. R. B. MARANTETTE and W. F. MARANTETTE. 22 Aug., 1966, No. 37625/66. Heading H4D. [Also in Division G3] A workpiece is positioned along X and Y axes at right angles by control signals derived from a photo-electric cell in dependence on the position of a light beam on the photoelectrie cell which has passed through an aperture in a template interconnected with a table carrying the workpiece. As shown, a cadmium selenide photo-cell comprises resistance portions R1-R4, connected as shown, whereby an off-centre positioning of a light-beam through a master template, Fig. 1, not shown, causes inequality in the values of the resistance portions. Electrodes 24-27 of the photo-cell are energized from a multi-vibrator 28, through cathode followers 29, 30 with square wave signals 31, 32 which are 180 degrees out-of-phase. The positive half of square wave 31 is applied through a diode D1 to electrode 24, and simultaneously the negative half of square wave 32 is applied through a diode D2 to electrode 26; the electrodes 25, 27 are isolated by diodes D3, D4. Any non-centring of the light-beam in the Y axis results in a signal appearing at a point C of the photo-cell which is determined by summing resistors R7, R8 and fed to a cathodefollower 38 controlling a Y axis servomotor, not shown, to move a printed circuit board, to which the template is connected, so that the light beam moves towards the centre C of the cell. A similar system controls the centring of the light beam about the X-axis. Inadvertent drilling of the printed circuit board when the light beam is not falling on the cell is prevented by a signal on line 17 from a differential amplifier 42 comparing a tapped voltage from a potentiometer R15, supplied through diodes D9, D10 with a voltage from diodes D5, D7, which is greater than that from the potentiometer when the resistance portions R1-R4 are not illuminated and have an high resistance.
