Overload protection for a static inverter S is provided by including in an output filter tuned to the fundamental frequency of the inverter an inductor L whose magnetic circuit has a portion arranged to saturate at a lower magnetic flux density than the remainder of the magnetic circuit. When the inverter load current reaches a predetermined value, this portion saturates abruptly, thereby detuning the filter and limiting the output. In preferred embodiments, the magnetic circuit comprises an iron core including a portion which is of reduced cross-sectional area or is made from a more readily saturable magnetic material. An air gap may be included in the core to maintain the value of the inductance constant, and thereby improve the regulation, over the load range up to the point at which the readily saturable portion of the core saturates. The gap may be filled with non-magnetic material.
