Abstract
1,107,460. Self-balancing platforms; spring drums; reels. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. 29 Nov., 1966, No. 53314/66. Headings B8B and B8M. A self-levelling device for maintaining the top of a stack of articles at a constant level as articles are removed from or added thereto, comprises a carrier assembly 40 vertically movable in a well 14 formed in a table top 13, and an endless suspension band 30 at opposite side ,of the carrier 40. Each band 30 passes over and is clamped to, a pair of studs 20 mounted on supporting structure 12 on the table top 13 and extends around pulleys 48 on the carrier 40 to a reel 70 on the carrier. Each reel 70 is of the squirrel-cage type and comprises two discs between which bridging bosses are clamped to form the drum of the reel and around one of which bosses the band is looped. The reel drum diameter is variable by means of the bridging bosses engaging radial slots in one disc and engaging a spiral slot in the opposite disc so that rotation of the latter disc relative to the former causes radial movement of the bosses. The spiral grooved discs at both sides of the carrier assembly are keyed together for like rotation and the two radial grooved discs are fixed together. A torsion spring coaxially extending between the two reels 70 is in connection at one end with the radial grooved discs and at the other end with the carrier assembly so that rotation of the said discs relative to the carrier initially tensions the spring to bias the carrier assembly into the elevated position.
