Abstract
1,107,359. Explosive forming. FOSTER WHEELER CORPORATION. 10 Nov., 1965 [13 April, 1965], No. 47788/65. Heading B3Q. A corrugated metal sheet is produced from a flat blank 14 by placing the blank over a number of parallel mushroom-sectioned supports 20, positioning strips 12 of explosive parallel to but intermediate the supports 20, covering the strips with a plastic sheet 36 and a trough of water 26, and detonating the explosive strips simultaneously. The corrugations are free formed between the supports 20, the resulting crosssection of the sheet being sinusoidal. In order to prevent shrinkage of the blank strips 36 of explosive are provided around the edges of the formed area of the blank to hold it down. A profiled sheet of explosive may be employed in place of the strips. The edges of the blank extend beyond the margins of the trough to prevent the overall dimensions of the blank from changing during forming. In an alternative form (Fig. 6, not shown) a panel 62 is formed over tubes 56 placed on a support 50. The non-functioning of one strip of explosive, as shown, has necessitated making a longitudinal pile of wet sand 82 enclosing primacord strips 78 and 80, the strips being detonated to form the missing corrugation.
