Abstract

1,106,974. Automatic character reading. MULLARD Ltd. 23 April, 1965 [30 Jan., 1964], No. 4086/64. Heading G4R. In character reading apparatus of the type in which the character is stored in a matrix as a pattern of binary signals the amount of noise is reduced by exploring a test area (e.g. of 3 x 3 matrix elements) around each element of a line in turn, designating the central element black if more than 5 of the 9 elements are black and white if more than 5 are white, entering the successive elements of the line in a store as designated black or white and, at the end of the line, replacing the original line with the stored line. The process is repeated several times until the stored pattern becomes stable. The invention is described in relation to the programmed computer system of Specification 1,106,972.
