Abstract
110,674. Thorne, H. Jan. 22, 1917. Obstruction-removers. - Relates to side-slip preventing devices for automobiles and other road vehicles, in which chains or other flexible elements carried by a rotary member driven from the road wheel or otherwise are adapted to be thrown by centrifugal force beneath the tread of the wheel. The device may also be used to remove small obstructions that might damage the tyre. One or more lengths of chain r are carried by a rotor r<1> connected by short chains s' to a flange s<2> on a spindle mounted in a bracket b pivoted to a clip h<3> on the axle casing. The spindle is rotated by a roller p, Fig. 5, which is pressed against a ring w<1> on the road wheel by a spring acting against the bracket b. The devices on both sides may be raised out of operation by cords operated from the driver's seat. Figs. 3 and 6 show a modification in which the ring w<1> has skew teeth engaging a similar toothed pinion p mounted on an arm p<2> pivoted to the clip h<3>. The pinion p drives the spindle through a shaft p' and flexible couplings p". The arms band p<2> are drawn respectively into an inoperative position when desired by links c<1>, p<3> connected as shown to the long arm of a bell crank lever c pivoted to a clip h<4> on the power-shaft casing. A link c<2> connects the short end of the lever c to a rod a controlled by the driver and guided by a link f.
