Abstract

1,106,431. Respiratory appliances. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. 1 March, 1966 [9 March, 1965], No. 9944/65. Heading AST. [Also in Division G3] In a system for maintaining the pressure in an oxygen mask independent of variations due to inhalation, a differential pressure transducer compares mask pressure with a reference pressure and produces an electrical error signal which controls, electronically, an inlet valve coupling the mask to an oxygen supply. In Fig. 2, oxygen is supplied from a high pressure source through a control valve 10 and an airmix valve 21 to a mask 1 for fitting over nose and mouth represented by passage 7. A capacitance differential pressure device 6 compares the pressure within the mask with that in a reference cavity 14 and any increase of capacity due to fall of pressure with inhalation is effective through an electronic controller 12 to open a spring biassed solenoid valve 10 sufficiently to restore the pressure. Increases of pressure during exhalation are relieved by a non-return valve 13 biassed by the reference pressure. Reference cavity 14 is supplied from high pressure source through a bleed valve 15 and the pressure within it is varied with altitude by an exhaust valve 16 controlled by a bellows 17 acting in opposition to ambient pressure. Capacitance increases in device 6 vary the frequency of a multivibrator associated with a frequency discriminator, a rate circuit and DC feedback amplifiers in controller 12, so that if the pressure drops are sufficiently sudden, e.g. due to breathing, solenoid valve 10, which is fluid cooled, opens proportionally to restore the pressure. This arrangement ensures that if the mask is taken off, solenoid valve 10 remains closed after the initial pressure change since there will be no further sudden change. A flow meter comprising a bleed valve may be included in the tube 11 connected to the high pressure source. The pressure drop across the bleed valve actuates a spring restrained piston associated with a magnetically operated reed switch to give an indication that oxygen is flowing. Above a predetermined rate of flow, the piston opens a by-pass to prevent the flow from being impeded. Constructional details of a suitable control valve having adjustable characteristics, a flow measuring device, and a capacitance measuring device are given.
