Abstract

1,106,341. Endless conveyers. SOLAR THOMSON ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. 17 March, 1965 [18 March, 1964; 19 June, 1964], Nos. 11518/64 and 25579/64. Heading B8A. An endless conveyer belt 17 wraps, and is driven by frictional engagement with, a plurality of separately driven sections of an endless driving belt 10, each section having a driving belt tension sensitive device 16 which depending on the loading on the conveyer, controls the motor drive to the drive pulley 11 of the drive belt section. The driving belt 10 is passed around pulleys 11 and 15 at each end of each driving section. The downstream pulley 11 of each section is driven from a motor 12 through fluid coupling 13, brake mechanism 14 and gear-box 14a. The tension sensitive device 16 comprises the pulley 15 whose shaft is carried by a pair of arms 21 which are pivoted at 22 to the supporting framework. The arms are sprung into the horizontal position by springs 25, and pivoting motion thereof is damped by dashpots 24. With overtension of a particular drive belt section the associated arm 21 pivots to contact a switch 26 which through a control motor 27 reduces the transmitting power of the fluid coupling 13 associated with the next downstream drive belt section motor and vice versa with undertension, the belt tension being thereby maintained at a predetermined value. The brake mechanism 14 is variably operated in conjunction with its associated fluid coupling. In a further embodiment, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), the tension sensitive device, which comprises a spring biased pivoted lever mounting a pulley, has its lever linked directly to a fluid coupling of the adjacent upstream drive belt section motor, to effect varying transmission power thereof.
