Abstract
MnSO4 solutions are produced from ferro-manganese and MnO2 ore by a process with the following steps: (i) adding water to a solution of MnSO4 and H2SO4 (ii) adding conc. H2SO4 (66 degrees Baume) in amount sufficient to convert both the FeMn and MnO2 to sulphates (iii) stirring and heating the solution to approx. 130 DEG F. (iv) adding MnO2 ore, agitating and heating the slurry to approx. 150 DEG F. (v) slowly adding FeMn (preferably mesh size -100 to 100 U.S. Standard) in ratio to MnO2 of from 2 : 1 to 1 : 2 to react with the acid to form MnSO4, FeSO4 and nascent hydrogen which together with the H2SO4 reacts with MnO2 to form MnSO4 (vi) stirring the slurry (4-12 hrs.) while aerating until Fe2(SO4)3 is formed and the pH is stable at 2-3 (vii) adding a basic material (FeMn, MnO2 or Co(OH)2) to raise pH to 6-6.5 to form Fe(OH)3 (viii) allowing the ppt. of Fe(OH)3 to settle and filtering it off with other impurities to give MnSO4 solution useful for the preparation of high purity MnO2.
