Abstract
A polymer is disclosed of M.W. 400-10,000 and having the formula <FORM:1106288/C3/1> in which the alkylene oxide groups are in random distribution and wherein R1 is alkyl: R2 is a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic radical of 5-20 C atoms which may be interrupted -S- or -O- atoms, or an aromatic or araliphatic radical; R3 is H, alkyl or a mono-, di-, tri- or tetra-functional aliphatic, aromatic, or acyl group; R4 is H or acyl, Q is alkylene or 3-5 C atoms, X is -O-, -S-, or -NH-; n is 1-20; m is 0-10; p is 1-5; r is 0-10; q is 9-200; and z is 1-5. The compound may be prepared by copolymerizing ethylene oxide and alkylene oxide compounds with compounds having at least one reactive H atom, e.g. alcohols, glycols, polyols, acids, amines and mercaptans. The reaction may be carried out in a solvent in the presence of a catalyst e.g. SnCl4, BF3, AlCl3, ZnCl2, KOH or alkali metal alcoholates. A starting compound may be prepared by reacting pentaerythritol with ethylene oxide, which is then reacted with further ethylene- and alkylene oxides.
