Abstract

1,105,691. Igniting oil burners. I. M. CROSS, and S. C. B. CROSS, [trading as BRANDON, GARNER & CO.]. 9 Sept., 1964 [19 June, 1963; 13 Sept., 1963], Nos. 24371/63 and 36163/63. Headings F4F and F4T. An oil heater, Fig. 1, is ignited automatically by an igniter 11, Fig. 7, energized by a bi-metal thermostat 8B, Fig. 4, responsive to ambient temperature. The igniter 11, comprises a tube of non-conductive combustible material having a hole 11E in which is placed pyrotechnic material 11D. An electrical resistance wire 11A for igniting the pyrotechnic material passes down the centre of the igniter and is connected to two end caps 11B. The igniter is held between a pillar 8H mounted on a metal lid 7 on the upper end of the flue tube 4 of the heater and a spring urged bolt 10A which engages a hole 10F in the flue tube 4 to retain the lid 7 thereon. A tube 9 containing electric batteries 9B is secured at an angle to the lid 7 and the weight of the batteries causes the lid to fall off the flue tube when the bolt is withdrawn. The bimetal thermostat energizes the resistance wire 11A which ignites the pyrotechnic material which in turn ignites the igniter tube. The igniter then bends at the middle to allow the bolt 10A to release the lid 7 and to pivot a flap 10C which ejects the igniter; the latter falls on to a kindler wick 6 in the heater. The heater comprises a metal oil container 1 having a tapered lid 2 and an upwardly tapered central tube 1D. The flue tube 4 fits over a flange 2B round a central hole in the lid 2 and an apertured extension flue tube 3 rests on the base of the container and is an easy fit inside the flange 2B. Primary air tubes 2E having longitudinal slots 29 are inserted through apertures 2C in the lid 2 and rest on the base of the container. Half cylindrical open-ended covers 2F protect the open ends of the air tubes 2E. A removable metal tube 5 is located over the tapered central tube 1D, and is provided with apertures 5C, 5E and a press-on cap 5B. A vapour lock ring 5D is fixed to the tube 5 and has a downward flange loosely located in the top of the central tube 1D. The wick kindler is annular and floats on the oil between the tubes 3, 5. The kindler may be made of absorbent material which floats or of absorbent material which is non-buoyant; in the latter ease it is supported on a metal float.
