Abstract

110,533. Marks, E. C. R., (Isko Incorporated). Oct. 13, 1916. Refrigerating, compression machines and processes for; ice-making, can or mould apparatus for; refrigerators, domestic and like.-A machine preferably employing sulphur dioxide as the refrigerant, and especially adapted for domestic refrigerators and similar purposes, is provided with an expansion valve automatically controlled by the difference between the atmospheric pressure and that in the evaporator, which is thereby main. tained at approximately atmospheric pressure, thus minimizing leakage at the stuffing-box of the compressor. The evaporator is formed by a single length of pipe bent into a series of horizontal W-shaped loops, as shown in Fig. 4, the whole forming a six-faced figure. Pans having depressions or moulds to receive water to be frozen for table use may be supported by adjacent loops, and the evaporator is suspended from a base mounted over an opening in a refrigerating-chamber and carrying the compressor and an air-cooled condenser. The arrangement of the machine on a chamber 311 is shown in Fig. 1, the compressor 32 and driving-motor 34 being surrounded by aircooled condenser coils 320 forming a guard. The base 30 is separated from the top of the refrigerator by a felt &c. pad 31 and the evaporator 12 is carried by vertical corner brackets 43, 45 secured at 44 to the base. Gas passes to the evaporator through the expansion valve 26, excess pressure in the condenser being relieved by a safety valve 42 in a by-pass 41. The expansion valve, Fig. 2, comprises a valve 60 carried by a thin metal diaphragm 54 subjected on the outside to atmospheric pressure and on the inside to the pressure in the evaporator 24<a>. The valve stem 63 is secured to the diaphragm by thin nuts 64, 65, with packing 66, and the edge of the diaphragm is secured by a ring 52 with packing 55. Communication between the outlet 25 of the condenser and the evaporator is established when the evaporator pressure falls below that of the atmosphere, a spring-loaded ball-valve 70 in a by-pass 69 acting to relieve excessive pressure in the condenser. The electric motor 34 may be controlled automatically by a thermostatic device 48 arranged near the evaporator.
