Abstract
A latex of a conjugated diene polymer having a high degree of particle uniformity and of surface tension uniformity is produced by continuously adding to an aqueous dispersion of a polymer latex of particle size less than that of the polymer particles to be produced, under polymerization conditions, monomer material which is soluble in the polymer latex and comprises conjugated diene and emulsifier, the rate at which the monomer is added being such that it is associated with the initial latex particles and the rate at which emulsifier is added being proportional to the rate of growth of surface area of the polymer particles and insufficient to cause the formation of micelles and provide loci for polymerization, and in amounts such that only 30 to 70% of the surface area of the particles is covered with emulsifier. The specified conjugated diene polymers are those of isoprene and 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene and of butadiene (preferred). The initial latex particles may make up 0.5 to 98% of the final polymer, the amount of initial latex particles being 2 to 10% of the monomer(s) added and their average size being 400 to 800A, while the latex produced may have an average particle size of 2000 A. The polymerization may take place at 60 DEG to 82 DEG C. under a pressure of 2.1 to 8.4 kg. per sq. cm. in the presence of a free radical initiator and the polymerization takes place until no more polymer is formed. The initial polymer latex may be an aqueous dispersion of a 60:40 styrene butadiene latex and the monomers added in the examples are (1) styrene, butadiene, methacrylic acid; (2), (3) butadiene, styrene, vinylidene chloride and methacrylic acid; (4) styrene and butadiene; (5) butadiene, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid; and (6) and (7) styrene and butadiene.
