A method of loosely attaching folded tags to packs with string comprises the steps of securing the two ends of a string to the folded tag and pack respectively, moving the folded tag and pack relatively towards one another through a channel which is substantially closed by the pack and tag and in which the string lies, so as to coil the string between the tag and pack and when the tag and pack are brought together, straddling the folded tag loosely over an edge of the pack with the string looped up within the tag. An apparatus for carrying out the above process comprises stores of coiled string, folded tags and packs respectively, a rotatable drum formed with equiangularly spaced radial slots, means for rotating the drum intermittently through angular steps each equal to the angular separation of the slots, a cutter spaced from the drum at a position adjacent one of the slots, called a cutterslot, for severing the string, a fastener carried by the drum at a position adjacent each slot for holding a leading end of the string after it has been severed, against the periphery of the drum at a position with respect to the direction of rotation of the drum immediately behind each slot, or reciprocating pusher spaced from the drum at a position opposite the slot, called the pusher slot next preceding the cutterslot for inserting string into a folded tag and for pushing the inserted string and a portion only of a tag into the pusher slot, a first stapler spaced from the drum at a position adjacent the pusher slot for securing uncut string to the tag in the pusher slot, a second stapler spaced from the drum at a position adjacent the slot called the assembly slot next following the cutterslot for securing the leading end of the string to a pack in the assembly slot and a stationary channel of section corresponding with the area of tag protruding from the drum disposed adjacent the drum over a portion of its periphery, the arrangement being such that loops of string may be collected in the tag as it passes through the channel in rotation of said drum, and means for placing the tag with its loops of string over one edge of the pack.
