Abstract

1,105,040. Multi-screw extruders. F. PRANDI, and G. P PRANDI; 15 Dec., 1965 [30 Sept., 1965], No. 53140/65. Heading B5A. An extrusion moulding machine comprises a plurality of screws 4 individually housed in barrels 5 arranged around a common axis, the screws being fed from a common hopper 2, see also Fig.: 2 (not reproduced), and discharging into and through a common outlet 6. A motor (not shown) which drives the screws may be connected selectively to one or more screws by friction clutches, mechanical or electromagnetic, but is preferably connected by a gear coupling. Each screw 4 may be axially extended by a chuck (4<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 4 (not shown), which is driven via a sleeve (5) and gears (11, 12) when an axially movable gear (17) on chuck (4<SP>1</SP>) is engaged with a gear (16) on sleeve (5). In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), a speed changer (18) is added which has an output shaft (21) selectively connectible to chuck (4<SP>1</SP>). The outputs from barrels 5, Fig. 1, may be combined in an extrusion nozzle attachable to outlet 6, see also Fig. 3 (not reproduced), and a multi-coloured product may be formed by using this head and suitably subdividing the feed zone of the screws.
