Abstract

A moisture-pervious non-woven polyamide fabric is made by dissolving a polyamide at elevated temperature in a liquid that is a non-solvent at room temperature but a solvent at elevated temperature, forming a layer of such solution by distributing it over a surface, cooling the layer of solution to achieve formstability and removing the solvent from the form-stable layer. The solution may be cooled to a temperature at which said liquid is a non-solvent thereby forming a solid solution and removing the solvent from the solid solution. The solvent may be removed by vapourization, e.g. under vacuum, or by leaching, preferably by means of a hot water bath, or by vacuum distillation. The form stable layer may be calendared and embossed. The surface may be of a fibrous material preferably woven, knitted or felted cloth. The fibrous material may be coated with the solution and the coating may be aided by subjecting the distributed layer to pressure. The solvent may be certain monohydric alcohols or a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. a glycol such as ethylene glycol, preferably triethylene glycol, propylene glycol and glycerine. The solution may be sprayed on to and distributed over the fibrous surface by doctor blades and smooth calender rolls. Examples of polyamides are given.
