Abstract

Polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting an organic polyiso(thio)cyanate with a wood resin having a softening point of at least 70 DEG C. and a low M.W. polyol having a hydroxyl number of at least 1000, in the presence of a catalyst which is an amine or a bi or a quadrivalent tin compound, a foaming agent and, if desired, a surface active agent. Conventional aromatic polyisocyanates, polysiloxanes as surface active agents, and water and volatile organic compounds as blowing agents are preferred. The preferred wood resin is a commercial pine wood resin with a softening point of about 112 DEG C. The low M.W. polyol is suitably trimethylolpropane, hexane - 1,2,6 - triol, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, mannitol, glucose, sucrose, glycerol and triethanolamine. Flame retardants such as trichloroethylphosphate, tri-(2,3 - dibromopropyl) phosphate, diammonium phosphate, red phosphorus and antimony oxide may be added to the reaction mixture.
