Abstract

1,104,679. Dynamometers. SOCIETE DES AUTOMOBILES SIMCA. July 16, 1965 [July 16, 1964], No. 30431/65. Heading G1W. Torque-measuring apparatus for interposition between a rotatable spindle 2 and a machine extension member 1 providing a reaction torque, to balance that of the spindle comprises a sleeve 7 secured to the extension 1 and to a casing 11 housing a friction disc clutch for coupling the spindle 2 to a driving member 33 integral with a flexible strut 19 with one 17 held between two balls (20), (21), Fig. 2 (not shown) in the casing 11 and the other end 18 in contact with the feeler 29 of a comparator gauge (30). In use on a screwing machine whose spindle 2 is driven by a compressed air turbine, the sleeve 7 is secured to the extension 1 and an adaptor 5 in the screwing ferrule 4 couples the spindle 2 to a spindle 6 to which clutch discs 38 are splined. With the turbine in operation a button 59 is turned to rotate a screw 56 in the casing 11 and so push upwards a plunger 51 supporting a tail-shaft 47 integral with the strut 19 to compress friction discs 40 between discs 35 splined to the driving member 33 and the discs 38, thus coupling the spindle 6 to the bar 19. The torque load on the turbine is balanced by the reaction torque of the casing 11 measured by deforming the strut 19. The strut is precalibrated so that a measurement of the torque can be derived from the reading of the comparator and the turbine adjusted until a desired reading is obtained.
